Special, Political, and Decolonization Committee

Single Delegate

The Special Political and Decolonization Committee, the Fourth Committee of the United Nations General Assembly, is the UN's dedicated forum for addressing the unfinished business of the international order: the political questions that fall outside the jurisdiction of other committees yet carry profound consequences for global peace, sovereignty, and self-determination. Originally established to oversee the decolonization process in the mid-twentieth century, SPECPOL has evolved into a wide-ranging committee whose mandate encompasses peacekeeping operations, the rights of peoples under foreign occupation, the work of UN relief agencies, the peaceful uses of outer space, and the ongoing status of the world's remaining non-self-governing territories. Where other committees operate within well-established legal and institutional frameworks, SPECPOL frequently navigates contested political terrain: questions of sovereignty, occupation, and self-determination that divide the international community along deep historical, regional, and ideological lines.

Topic A: Establishing an International Framework for Genocide Reparations and the Reform of War Crimes Accountability Mechanisms

Topic B: Safeguarding Artificial Intelligence from Political Interference and State Manipulation

Dear delegates,

Hi everyone! My name is Judy and I'm a sophomore from West Windsor, New Jersey, studying classics at Stanford. I was a full delegate in Model Congress for three years in high school and part time MUN. In my free time I love reading, writing poetry, and jumping rope. I'm so excited to be your SPECPOL chair for this year's SMUNC. Can't wait to meet you all!
