International Criminal Court

Single Delegate

The International Criminal Court (ICC) is a permanent international tribunal established to investigate and prosecute individuals accused of the most serious crimes of international concern, including genocide, crimes against humanity, war crimes, and the crime of aggression. Operating under the framework of the Rome Statute, the ICC exercises jurisdiction when national courts are unwilling or unable to carry out prosecutions, emphasizing the principle of complementarity. The Court is composed of judges, prosecutors, and defense counsel who work to ensure fair and impartial trials while upholding international legal standards. As a committee, the ICC focuses on questions of accountability, jurisdiction, and the enforcement of international criminal law within the broader global system.

Topic A: The Extrajudicial Capture of Nicolás Maduro

Topic B: Considering the Legality of Hacking for Justice: The Joseph Kony Case

Dear delegates,

My name is Aaron Henschel, and I’m excited to be the head chair of ICC for this year’s SMUNC! As a freshman at Stanford, I plan to major in Political Science and minor in Economics and Spanish. I spent four years debating, staffing, and chairing for my high school’s Model UN program; my experience includes chairing for NATO, ECOFIN, and DISEC, as well as debating in ECOSOC, UNDP, and WHO. I’m excited to dive into two ICC topics pertinent to current events shaping international relations.

In addition to my academics at Stanford, I sing for the Stanford Mendicants, Stanford’s first all-male a cappella group founded in 1963. My passion for singing stems from my love for musical theater, and I’m always down to debate the best shows on Broadway. I also enjoy collecting vinyl records—some recent additions include Belle and Sebastian, Geese, and Tyler, the Creator. I’m excited to meet all of you at SMUNC XXX, and I look forward to committee!
