Joint Crisis Committee Spanish succession: habsburg bloc

Single Delegate

As the great powers of Europe brace for what threatens to become the continent's most consequential dynastic conflict, the Habsburg Bloc convenes in Vienna to coordinate the military, diplomatic, and financial campaign to place Archduke Charles of Austria on the throne of Spain. The prospect of a unified Bourbon monarchy stretching from Paris to Madrid, commanding the wealth of the Spanish empire and the military might of France, represents an existential threat to the balance of power in Europe, and it is this shared alarm that binds the Grand Alliance together. Austria, England, the Dutch Republic, and a constellation of German princes and Italian states have united under the common cause of containing French hegemony and preserving Habsburg legitimacy over the Spanish succession. Yet alliance unity is easier proclaimed than maintained. Member states bring to Vienna divergent strategic priorities, competing territorial ambitions, and vastly different capacities for sustained warfare. England eyes commercial advantage and naval supremacy. The Dutch fear French encroachment on their borders. Austria seeks dynastic glory and imperial consolidation. Holding this coalition together is as formidable a challenge as the conflict itself. The fate of Archduke Charles, and with him the balance of European power for generations, rests on what is decided here.

Dear Delegates,

Hello everyone! My name is Carter Lawrence, and I am a sophomore studying economics with a minor in history here at Stanford. I am originally from Inglewood, California, but I have enjoyed getting to know the bay over the last year and a half. This is my second year staffing SMUNC, but I have debated across the country since middle school. I am a sports fanatic and a war buff, and in my free time, I enjoy playing soccer and doing side quests both on campus and in SF.

I am excited to serve as crisis director for the [committee name] JCC. I hope you enjoy the strategy, collaboration and problem-solving of this fast-paced crisis committee, but as always, keep your friends close and your enemies closer.
