General Assembly Plenary

Double Delegate

The United Nations General Assembly is the world's foremost multilateral deliberative body, the only organ of the international system in which all 193 member states hold an equal voice and an equal vote. Established by the UN Charter in 1945, the General Assembly serves as the central forum through which the international community discusses, debates, and pronounces on the full spectrum of global challenges, from international peace and security to development, human rights, international law, and the reform of the United Nations itself. Unlike the Security Council, where five permanent members wield veto power over binding resolutions, the General Assembly operates on the principle of sovereign equality, giving the smallest island nation the same formal standing as the world's largest powers. Its resolutions, while non-binding, carry significant moral and political weight, reflecting the collective conscience of the international community and shaping the norms that govern state behavior across every domain of international affairs.

Topic A: Protecting journalists within armed conflicts and the Issue of Impunity

Topic B: Regulating the use of artificial intelligence while preserving state sovereignty over digital infrastructure and data

Dear delegates,

Hi everyone, my name is Juna Manabe, and I’m excited to be chairing the United Nations General Assembly Plenary committee this year! I’ve been involved in Model UN since 7th grade, and since then, MUN has drawn me to take action in getting involved with tackling global issues through debating, discussions, caucusing and collaboration. Some of my most meaningful MUN experiences was being a Model UN Teacher’s Assistant for my high school model un program, where I have also had the opportunity at debating at Harvard Model UN where I won Best Delegate in the SOCHUM Committee, and I was the chosen UNICEF Plenary Speaker of National High School Model UN at New York.

Outside of MUN, I enjoy spending time at the beach, going to hot yoga and concerts, and I love going out with friends and trying new restaurants. As a chair, I value well-researched specific speeches and diplomatic delegates who prioritize collaboration and country policy. The UN General Assembly is the largest and in my opinion, the most competitive committee, so I’m looking forward to seeing how all of you adapt, improvise, and overcome through difficulties, challenges, and solution-building. I am so excited for this committee and to meet you all!

Juna Manabe
